Leo’s By-Election Limbo.

It seems there is growing unrest within Fine Gael at Leo Varadkar’s still unwillingness to name the by-election date for Dublin Bay South. Yes, that’s right. He’s still not officially called it.
.
The area is still without proper elected representation and is likely to be for some time as Leo keeps up his hesitating. Fellow Fine Gael members are not impressed, and their numbers are growing.
.
Despite no actual date called, it hasn’t stopped announced official runners from FG and FF from already hitting local doorsteps. Many in FG and beyond it, see the by-election as a two horse race, with a few ‘also rans’.
.
FG very much fear the running of ‘Golden Girl’ Lynn Boylan of Sinn Fein against their parachuting in candidate, James Geoghegan. FG have very little to throw against Lynn Boylan personally – for a start, she actually lives in the area and was brought up there, unlike the FG runner that they reportedly tried to impose was living there too – except that he doesn’t!
.
James Geoghegan has also come under political criticism for being found to lobby for smoking industry businesses, for trying to make himself out as ‘the voice of the homeless’ while being a millionaire barrister and like his party, seen so far not able to produce his own plans to genuinely tackle the current growing housing crises.
.
FG members in the area are especially peed off with Mr Varadkar sitting on his hands, unwilling to name a by-election date as they also recognise that FF and the Greens are likely to get a very poor vote as things are going from bad to worse for them and their own runners. Lower votes for them translates to fewer vote transfers to their own runner. The longer Leo hesitates, FG heads fear the more time for sinking of FF/Green numbers.
.
With around 50% of the area being renters, just how many of them coming out to vote, will make a huge difference to the eventual outcome of the local vote count. If SF can successfully convince many of those residents to come out to vote on the day, the by-election could be theirs to lose! Much to FG serious fear.
