As part of her Scoliosis treatment, Dakota went in on the
23rd of October, 2007 for her first body cast. As can be seen by the before and after pics, the difference in the shape of
the spine is dramatic. Note the sharp spine correction at one center point., This could have had SERIOUS consequences on her
breathing and subsequently (pressure), her physical lungs. The right side of the body cast is normal curved but the left side
as seen in the x-ray, has a deliberate indentation to force the corrections needed.
The body cast has to be changed
approx every two months. This may vary according to growing spurts but this is the average change time. The cast is fiberglass,
waterproof and is worn permanently. We are told that she will have to wear this type of cast till she is between six to eight.
What happens then after that, is that she will be wearing a body brace, something that is slightly different in a number of
ways.
It was hard having to watch (a teary eyed) Dakota being knocked out by gas on the operating table but in the
back of our minds, we kept telling ourselves that is was and will be for her own good. The seening of the x-rays afterwards
while she was recovering, helped reassure us of this fact further.
After the fixing and hardening of the cast, she
was returned to us around an hour later (as can be seen in the "Recovering" pic). At that point we made a point of spoiling
her.
